About Marty

Born and raised in Pittsfield, Mass., Marty Plankey started playing the guitar and drums in 1966, and started teaching music in 1988. He has taught thousands of students of all ages and backgrounds. He taught guitar at Falcetti Music in Pittsfield for 15 years, as well as being the music teacher at Saint Agnes Academy in Dalton during the late 90s. It is his passion and his livelihood. During the pandemic, lessons were limited to Skype. Skype lessons are perfect for students from outside Western Massachusetts to realize their dreams of learning to read music, or just experience the fun of playing the guitar, bass or ukulele. With the development of COVID vaccines, “in person” lessons are again available, providing students are fully vaccinated. Facemasks are strongly advised. Lesson material can be sent directly to each student via email, and we can work together or answer any questions you may have during your online lesson. Lesson payments can be made in person, via Pay Pal or by mail. As always, in the event of a cancellation or having to reschedule, at least 4 hours notice is appreciated.

MARTy's Mission

Music and making or playing music are joys in life that almost everyone wants to experience at some point. Teaching children and adults to play music is the best way I know of sharing my love for music with others. Everyone has a sense of rhythm and pitch; it's my goal to take that sense and apply it in a practical and comprehensive way to the instrument of their choice, be it the guitar, bass, ukulele, 5 string banjo, or the blues harmonica. Sharing the joy and passion of making music has been my purpose in life for over 30 years. It's been both fun and satisfying to see the happiness and sense of accomplishment so many of my students have gained over the years through their enjoyment of making music. I love teaching.

“Without music to decorate it, time is just a bunch of boring production deadlines or dates by which bills must be paid.”
— Frank Zappa, 20th century composer and musician
